Why is this image named Sunset One Oak Island? I decided to number my sunsets instead of creating unique names. I have been spending time on Oak Island, North Carolina, since the late 70s. It was known as Long Beach until 1999.
Oak Island Sunsets
The one thing I have begun to appreciate over the last ten years is the incredible beauty and diversity of the sunsets. The position of the island in respect to the Atlantic Ocean allows for over-the-water sunsets.
Photo Names and Meatloaf
Initially, I tried to come up with a cool, unique name for each different sunset photograph. The problem is that you can only use “beautiful sunset” so many times. If I had a nickel for every time I have hummed, “Don’t let the sun go down on me.” Or hearing “For Crying Out Loud” when standing on the chilly Carolina sand at sunset. If the image speaks to me or invokes a reference to a song, poem, or quote, I may use a unique name. The Realms of Day is an example where an idea that matched my feeling. Sometimes I am trying to capture a feeling with an image instead of a photograph’s sentiment.
Art Is Personal
However, I do not want to limit the number of images I can share based on my ability to match what I felt when I took the photo. Sometimes I would not post a picture because it didn’t create that connection. I looked back at some of the images that I now consider my best work. I was not able to relate, so I missed them. While Sunset One Oak Island may be a little boring, numbering my sunsets is my current plan. I believe that art is personal, and hopefully, my work will remind you of a time, place, smells, and feeling that makes you happy.
